BIO STATEMENT
Charles Kemmler, MD, PhD, FACEP is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and a Medical Officer in the U.S. National Disaster Medical System. His experience in global health has included Emergency Medicine training, clinical care, teaching and medical education research in Pakistan, Botswana and South Africa. His current interests include Emergency and Disaster Medicine education and educational capacity building.
Recent Global Health Projects
Dr. Kemmler has served as a visiting faculty member to the Certification Program in Emergency Medicine (CPEM) at the Indus Hospital and Health Network in Karachi, Pakistan, since 2019. CPEM is an Emergency Medicine capacity building program providing a 1-year training course to physicians staffing the country’s Emergency Departments. In this role, Dr. Kemmler has provided didactic and clinical training, as well as participated in an assessment of the program and scholarly dissemination of this work.
Dr. Kemmler has also participated in the education of Emergency Medicine residents at the University of Botswana, providing bedside, simulation-based and research training as visiting faculty through the Botswana-UPenn partnership. As Co-Director of the Contemporary Pandemics course at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, he advanced the clinical education of fourth-year medical students in HIV and tuberculosis care and the relevance of policy and social factors to that care.
As part of the U.S. National Disaster Medical System, Dr. Kemmler served as Chief Medical Officer for the Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton responses of the South Carolina-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team, contributing to operational decision-making and orchestrating just-in-time provider education.
